Balavidyalaya Institute for Teacher Training offers a Diploma in Teaching Young Hearing Impaired (DTYHI). The Rehabilitation Council of India and the Government of Tamilnadu recognize the Diploma. The Rehabilitation Council of India has accredited 'BALAVIDYALAYA INSTITUTE FOR TEACHER TRAINING' with EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE RATING. Application forms are issued from the month of January every year. Eligibility for joining the course: Trained teachers in general education like B.Ed Graduates in any stream H.Sc., with training in any one of the early childhood education courses like Montessori, Kindergarten, Nursery or Preprimary Education Knowledge of English is essential as the lectures and the teaching manuals are in English. But if the candidate so requires she can write the examinations in Tamil the regional language of Tamilnadu. The training equips the trainee to help infants and young children from birth to six years, to make use of the residual hearing and develop speech and language skills and join the regular mainstream education. Parent counseling and parent guidance is an important area covered in the training. The Training consists of 60 % of Practical Work and 40 % of Theory. The five theory papers are as follows: Education of Young children with hearing impairment, Parent Empowerment & Integration into mainstream education Curriculum Planning & Methods of Teaching Infants and young children with hearing impairment – Birth to 3 years & 3 to 6 years Acquisition of Receptive and expressive Language in Infants and young children with hearing impairment – Birth to 3 years & 3 to 6 years Audiological Management of young children with hearing impairment - Birth to 3 years & 3 to 6 years Child Development and Child Psychology with special reference to children with hearing impairment - Birth to 3 years & 3 to 6 years There is no Tuition Fee for the Training. However the candidates need to pay Rs. 6,800/- towards the cost of five manuals for the theory papers, Materials for teaching aids and the Examination fee. Hostel facilities are outsourced. The hostel fee for boarding and lodging costs between Rs.2,500/- to Rs 5000/- Balavidyalaya can help in getting accommodation in nearby hostels.
