The NSSO reports indicate that there are over 3 lakh children in India suffering from deafness, in the range of 0-4 years. A Multi Centric Study by ICMR-1995 reported that 1 out of 1000 children born in India was deaf. International agencies also project that while 1/1000 is born deaf in developing countries, it is 1/3000 in developed nations. It is estimated that over 25,000 children are born deaf every year across the 3.28 million sq.km of India.  
   
  According to the 2001 census Tamil nadu has 62,920 persons suffering from hearing-impairment.

There are 530 schools in India educating around 50,000 children with hearing impairment in the age group of 5 to 18 years. The other children are not receiving any formal education.

Balavidyalaya has 14 sound treated class rooms, one playpen for children less than 2 years, one play house for children from 2 to 6 years, two sandpits, 2 sets of swings, one slide, one see-saw and one jungle-jim. 24 trained teachers and 10 teacher assistants, 6 office assistants, one peon, one watchman and two ayahs, take care of the 180 students. The teacher student ratio begins as 1:1 and slowly becomes into 1:4.

The babies less than 18 months attend school one hour a day. As the children get older they stay for a longer time. Children above 3 years stay from 10.30a.m.to 3.00p.m.
