The difficulties faced by children from the Tamil medium in the mainstream are assessed and a policy change is made. All the parents of children in the Tamil medium are given an option to change the children into the English medium while continuing to talk in their mother tongue at home. Except four children the whole Tamil medium decides to shift to the English medium. A syllabus is worked out for the transition classes and the new venture starts with a decision to review the progress of the children at the end of the term.

Balavidyalaya has a stall in the Tourism Trade Fair held in Island Grounds under the banner of the Department of differently abled. Materials for Early identification, early intervention and DHVANI Methodology is displayed. Two staff take it in turns on rotation to man the stall during the week ends.
The NCED Conference on ‘Enhancing quality of Education of students with hearing impairment – Needs and practices’ is held in Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology organized by the NCED Tamilnadu Chapter.

The 3rd Open house is conducted for all the NCED delegates. Around 44 delegates from Cities of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, Mumbai, and Pune visit. They watch the school at work. The three minute teaser is screened. Balavidyalaya shows a presentation on how they could start early intervention centers in their home towns. A discussion ensues where clarifications are answered. They disperse after lunch.
The refresher course funded by the Government of Tamilnadu on ‘Oralism as the option in early intervention and development of receptive and expressive language in deaf children’ is held. 46 special educators in the early intervention centers from the various districts of Tamilnadu participate.

The 8th Open Day is held for the teachers of mainstream schools and colleges. Charts on importance of identification and early intervention is put up and explained. The three minute teaser on Balavidyalaya is screened. A discussion is held on how the mainstream school teachers could lend a helping hand to the mainstreamed child.
The 9th celebration is the Teachers Day. In the afternoon for one hour the parents played with the children. Care was taken to ensure it was not their child’s class. Then the parents volunteered to entertain the staff and students for the next hour. The parents enthusiastically put up a classical dance, had a role play rhyme, two role play stories and conducted games for the teachers. The school then hosted a tea party for the parents, children and teachers.

Chandrasekar Institute of Speech and Hearing in Bangalore. She presents a paper on “DHVANI Methodology breaks the barrier of silence, enables deaf & hard of hearing children listen and talk & makes mainstream education accessible”

Saraswathi Puja in school is celebrated in a grand manner as the 10th celebration for the year. All the children and parents see the golu display in school. The children individually paid obeisance to their respective parents and give them betel leaves, turmeric, betel nut, fruits and flowers. The parents and children then are given a cup of sundal made by the school. The parents and children enthusiastically participate in the celebrations.

Children’s Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm as the 11th Celebration for the year. A merry-go-round, and games is organised for the children. The children and the parents go round the school playing the various games. A group of alumni parents and some alumni sponsor gifts, balloons and snacks for all the children.
Dr. Valli Annamalai attends the Annual Day celebration of Thursday Charity Club and collects a donation from them.
An awareness walk is held on the 1st of December the school’s 50th Birthday as the 12th Celebration of the year. The walk ‘Help deaf and hard of hearing children listen from infancy and talk for a lifetime’ is held in Elliots Beach road. The walk is flagged off by Dr Nirmala Muthu the President of the PTA. The walk starts at Thalapakatti Briyani, went up to Vellankani Church and ends at Cozy Restaurant. All the participants are given T Shirts with the schools emblem and motto and caps. The participants carry the schools banner and placards carrying messages to reach out to the public.
The Golden Jubilee Celebrations is held on the 19, 20 and 21st of December. An International Conference is held on the 19th and the 20th in Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall. 8 eminent specialist in the field of deafness from US and India participate as resource persons. The conference has more than 500 participants from various parts of the country, Srilanka, Dubai, and Australia.
The conference is inaugurated by Dr Suni Mathew, Dr. Christine Yoshinaga-Itano as the Conference Lead and Dr N. Rathna as the Special Guest.
The Valedictory Function is held on the 20th with Dr Himangshu Das the Director of National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities NIEPMD delivering the Valedictory Address and Prof Rangasayee summing up the Conference.
The 19th evening Balavidyalaya Trust hosts a dinner for the alumni, their family members, current children, their family members and staff with their family members.
On the 21st morning Dr. Christine Yoshinaga-Itano, Mr. Emilio Alonso-Mendoza, Ms. Gayla Guignard visit school and are taken around.
On the 21st evening the Golden Jubilee is celebrated in Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall with Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Deputy Director General of Programmes WHO as the Chief Guest and Dr N.Rathna as the Special Guest. Dr. Christine Yoshinaga-Itano, Mr. Emilio Alonso-Mendoza, Ms. Gayla Guignard and Prof. R. Rangasayee participate as the Conference Resource Team. Around 750 people including the alumni, and their parents attend the celebrations.
